Origin

The baroque period flourished in the 17th century in Rome, then in all Italy and finally spreading to the rest of Europe. The word baroque comes from the Italian barroco, which means extravagant or bizarre.

Characteristics

In this period, the dramatic, religious and mythological themes are related in an exaggerated way. There is a lack of balance between reason and emotion, very different from the Renaissance where the elements are in harmony.

The art pieces show conflicts, such as good versus evil, heaven versus hell, etc.

The later Baroque style gradually gave way to a more decorative Rococo style, full of intensity, individualism and detail.
